General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum to Unveil New Exhibit: Task Force Dagger
For Immediate Release: Aug. 26, 2019
The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum is proud to announce the debut of its newest exhibit, “Task Force Dagger,” featuring the Horse Soldiers of Afghanistan. This exhibit tells the story of the Joint Special Operations Task Force North, otherwise known as Task Force Dagger. The exhibit will first be on display at the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum and then will be available as a traveling exhibit.
The exhibit will open at the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum on Saturday, Sept. 7. Beginning at 11 a.m., Phil Reilly, former senior CIA field operative and MG Gary Harrell (Ret.), will be speaking about their experiences at the Stanley Building at 300 S. Washington in Hobart. Following the speakers’ presentations is a picnic lunch at the Creamery Building, located at 507 S. Main Street in Hobart. Starting at 1 p.m. the Task Force Dagger exhibit will be open to the public.
After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, President George W. Bush asked General Franks to lead America’s response to this attack.
“General Franks faced many difficult challenges as the planning developed to defeat al-Qa’ida and the Taliban,” said D’Lese Travis, executive director of the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum. “This very special exhibit tells unknown details about this unique operation and offers insight into the unique components required for combat operations during the initial phases of Operation Enduring Freedom and exemplifies one of our core values, common vision. We are proud to be able to present this story to our visitors as well as loan the exhibit to other institutions and expand the stories’ reach.”
The Task Force Dagger was one of the first Joint Special Operations Task Forces to begin operations along with the CIA’s Jawbreaker team. This Force was critical in assisting the Afghan Northern Alliance in achieving victory in northern Afghanistan in the initial phase of Operation Enduring Freedom. This exhibit highlights these group members and their respective missions.
The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, please visit TommyFranksMuseum.org.
The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum was created as a historical foundation dedicated to telling the story of the United States military and education. Its mission is to advance the development of this world class leadership training institution and museum. For more information, visit TommyFranksMuseum.org.
